Forte Verena, constructed in 1910-1914 at the top of 2.019 metres high Monte Verena, was regarded as the most significant fort in the Asiago area, the main protection of the Val d'Astico inroad and a direct opponent to Austrian forts of Verle (Busa Verle) and Spitz Verle.

Trdnjava Verena je bila zgrajena v letih 1910-1914 na vrhu 2.019 metrov visoke gore Verena kot osrednja trdnjava v okolici Asiaga in glavni branik doline Astico. Bila je neposredni nasprotnik avstrijskih utrdb Verle in Spitz Verle.

Main armament were four Armstrong 149 mm cannons in rotating steel cupolas. There were also 4 casemated machine-guns for close defence and two batteries of 75 mm cannons in vicinity (in barbette type positions).

Glavno oborozitev so predstavljali stirje topovi Armstrong 149mm v vrtljivih kupolah. Za obrambo od blizu naj bi skrbeli stirje mitraljezi v kazematah, nedalec od utrdbe pa sta bili tudi dve bateriji 75mm topov v odprtih polozajih.

After Italian declaration of war in May 1915, followed by a so-called "Guerra dei Forti" that lasted less than 20 days, on June 12 1915 the fort received a direct hit from Skoda 305 howitzer that penetrated the armour and exploded in the ammunition storage, killing the commander Umberto Trucchetti and 43 of his crew.

Po kratki "Vojni trdnjav", ki je sledila italijanski vojni napovedi in trajala slabih 20 dni, je 12. junija 1915 trdnjavo zadel izstrelek iz Skodine havbice 305 mm, ki je predrl oklep in eksplodiral v skladiscu streliva. V eksploziji so umrli poveljnik Umberto Trucchetti in se 43 clanov posadke.

Following hits render the fort unusable, it was evacuated and used only as an observatory. On May 22, during the "Strafexpedition" offensive Austrians captured the fort and held it until the end of the war.

Naslednjih nekaj zadetkov je trdnjavo popolnoma onesposobilo in v naslednjih dneh so jo evakuirali ter jo uporabljali le se kot opazovalnico. 22. maja 1916, med ofenzivo imenovano "Strafexpedition" so Avstrijci trdnjavo zasedliin jo obdrzali v svojih rokah do konca vojne.
