PETROVARADIN FORTRESS
PETROVARADINSKA TRDNJAVA

This page is part of the SiteO web site.

Perovaradin Fortress, built by Austrians in eighteen century, lies on a hill beside Danube, overlooking the city of Novi Sad on the opposite shore, the centre of Vojvodina region in present day Serbia and Montenegro.

The following material was sent by Nenad Seguljev. He was intrigued by the fortress back in 1993 when visited it with his class as a high school student. But first available data were few: "Petrovaradin Fortress was built according to plans originating from Sebastian Vauban, who never actually saw this fort" or "There's 16 kilometres of underground galleries on four levels with 10.000 rifle embrasures". Only few years ago he gathered sufficiant data to get the whole picture. Especually valuable was data provided by American fortification enthusiast William Scheck, an expert for mine warfare. Great help was also Vouban Museum in France and Chantal Rigo.

the map presents the fortress as it was in 1768. It contains:

A Upper Fort (still exist)

B Hornverk (still exist)

C Wasserstadt (still exist)

D Bridgehead (demolished in twenties of the XX century)

E Islan Fort (sunk in thirties of the XIX century)

Nenad Seguljev, whose mail was forwarded to me by Zlatko Devedjic of NUF, plans to built his own site about this magnificen fort built by Austria against Otoman Empire. But for the time being I'm happy to host his material on the Regional SiteO site. Here's the entire original Nenad's text.

Photos are by Nenad Seguljev, published here with his permission. They are giving a good hint about the size and look of this great fortress.

Zemljevid upodablja trdnjavo leta 1768. Vsebuje:

A Gornja trdnjava(ohranjena)

B Hornverk (ohranjena)

C Wasserstadt (ohranjena)

D Bridgehead (podrta v dvajsetih letih XX stoletja)

E Otoska trdnjava (potopljena v tridesetih letih XIX stoletja)

Fotografije je posnel Nenad Seguljev, tu so objavljene z njegovim dovoljenjem. Lepo dajo slutiti velikost in videz te velike trdnjave.
