..."Today is Castle day in the Krka River valley; we spend a day looking at 15th and 16th century castles with a few others added for good measure. First up is Turjak. The large gun tower and its gun ports are particularly impressive. The castle was built in the C11th by the local family of Ausberg." ...

... "Our next castle, Zuzemberk, was known for its seven towers; first mentioned in 1246 it also belonged to the Ausbergs. The inner medieval structure was destroyed in 1945 and today a long term restoration programme is ongoing. We did not expect to be able to go into this one because of the restoration, but the Director of the Municipal Administration, Vlado Kostevc, was to hand and opened up the castle for us."...

... "As the coach sped along we saw numerous vineyards planted on the valley terraces and enjoyed the views of woods and mountains."...

..."We then drove to Gracarjev Turn, a C14th castle built on the site of C14th lodgings. This was an impressive castle with two C16th defensive bastions and a typical colonnaded courtyard arrangement. The castle was attacked several times by Turkish pillaging parties, the last time in 1829. The caretaker Anton Vodopivec arrives by prior arrangement and we all pile into the castle "...

..."Brezice Castle was our next stop; once it stood next to the river but is now well over 300m away. The castle saw heavy fighting between 1479 and 1491 between the forces of emperor Friedrich III of Habsburg and the Hungarian King Matia Korvin. In 1515 local peasants burnt down the castle but between 1530 and 1551 the ruins were rebuilt. During WWII its Knights Hall was used as a German military hospital; after the war the castle became the home of Posavski Muzej. Our last castle for the day was up into the hills and along the Orlica ridge where the fairytale looking castle of Pisece had been restored, in which Ad Pirum had played a part."...
