..."This morning we passed our first site of the day without stopping; the Roman remains at Hruica, once the Roman fort of Ad Pirum"... ... "Memorial to the Defenders of Slovenian Soil at Cerje on the infamous Kras plateau; here Anton was one of the three architects from the Ad Pirum Institute who designed this project, which was still under construction" ... ... "Back in the coach and on to Monte San Michele, eventually taken by the Italians in their sixth offensive; here they had quarried a number of galleries for eight 149mm cannons, 149/35 model 1905 with a maximum range of around 16,500m." ... ... "Very close is the walled city of Gradisca; here we walked around the walls looking also at the citadel which was locked, overgrown and derelict inside. During the "Salt Wars" between Austria and Venice in 1508 1516 and 1615 1617 Gradisca was the main Austrian stronghold. The last role it played was against the French after which the fortification became obsolete and despite its proximity to the WWI battle lines it played no part."... ..."Above Redipuglia is Monte Sei Busi, an Austrian position taken by the Italians and converted into a well fortified reserve position with loopholed concrete trenches and firing steps . After a drive we reach the wonderful symetrical city of Palmanova founded on October 7th 1593 by the superintendent of the Republic of Venice, a date chosen to celebrate the battle of Lepanto. Vicenzo Scamozzi built the fortress city in accordance with Renaissance fortification ideals. Shaped as a perfect nonagon with nine arrow shaped bastions and three gateways, it represents the best example of that model. Having wanted to come in through the Porta Udine (NW) we only found it covered in scaffolding, someone forgot to tell them we were coming. The next gate Porta Aquileia (S) couldn't accommodate us as the coach was too tall, but third time lucky and we were through the Porta Cividale (NE), parking outside the now closed museum. At least we did a full circuit of the perimeter."...
