"The Saturday of weekend nearest 9th May bought out many of the people of Ljubljana to walk the 32km of what had once been the "Ring of Wire" around the city. In 1942 the Italians had surrounded the city with barbed wire and later fortified the road junctions with pillboxes and roadblocks. Almost all the defences have been removed; just one or two pillboxes remain. The Ring of Wire is protected as a National Reserve and is now a well signposted walkway also known as the "Path of Remembrance and Comradeship". Having caught the bus out to the route, five of our early birds and Alex joined in the walk with Alex pointing out interesting features along the way and chatting to fellow walkers." "We walked only a few kilometres but saw two pillboxes and defended junctions before catching the bus back to the city then walking back to the hotel via some of the remains of Roman Ljubljana and other architecture along the way. Ljubljana is a splendid town for Art Deco buildings."
