On November 14. Zlatko Devedzic was evicted from FORT BOURGUIGNON in Pula. After 18 years of care for military architecture pearl of Pula this fortification enthusiast has lost the legal battle with the city of Pula after the city has called off the lease contract it has signed with him. While we aren't familiar with all the legal details, here are some facts that must be nevertheless taken in consideration: - while the vast fortification heritage of Pula is progressively dilapidating Zlatko has managed to restore Fort Bourguignon to a decent shape at no cost for the city of Pula. - During the expert conference about fortification heritage in 2005 (organised by Mrs. Zofia Mavar, Ministry of Culture of Republic of Croatia) the leading conservationist authorities of Croatia, Montenegro and Poland (the heads of respective national heritage and conservation agencies) as well as experts from Serbia, Austria and Slovenia has recognised that Zlatko has brought the fort into function without jeopardising in any way it's structure and heritage value. One must therefore ask this question: even if the City of Pula has only strictly followed the law, what did they gain by throwing out this devoted enthusiast? Has it enable yet one more fort to fall in disrepair? As if there weren't many enough already. In fact it is the belief of the author of this article that the attitude of the majority of the locals towards their heritage is straight forward shameful. And according to this same opinion the recent event hasn't at all improved this impression. For all of those who would wish to convey their views (and especially for those of you who have met Zlatko) here are some e-mails:
