ABOUT THE UNIT

The "IR17 - Kronprinz" memorial unit started it's activity as a group of devotees interested in historic uniforms and military history of the First World War. It was formed by A.J. Potocnik in 2003. In 2007 it's activity was endorsed by the "nameholder" of the original WW1 unit, Archduke Otto von Habsburg, thus becoming a memorial unit. In 2008 it was incorporated as a "IR17 History Association". That same year ta new leader of the group became Marko Negrieski. This site is devoted to the first five pioneering years.

...

First to adorn colours of the Ljubljna based 17th Infantry Regiment called traditionally "Kranjski Janezi" and after 1916 also officially "Crownprince Regiment" were in January 2003 Janze Klun, Bogdan Vitez and Aleksander J. Potocnik. The activity was interrupted when Slovenian Army was professionalised and Janze Klun and Bogdan Vitez joined the force.

O ENOTI

...

Prvi, ki smo si januarja leta 2003 nadeli barve 17. pespolka "kranjskih Janezov" iz Ljubljane smo bili Janze Klun, Bogdan Vitez in Saso A.J. Potocnik.

At the beginning there were no sources of historic uniforms and equipment. So from the very start the group relied heavily on support of a brave tailor and leather maker Roman Androjna, who made scores of uniforms and pieces of equipment. Na zacetku se ni bilo mogoce nikjer dobiti replik zgodovinskih uniform in opreme. Zato se je skupina ze od samega zacetka zanasala na pomoc izvrstnega krojaca in usnjarja Romana Androjno, ki je zanjo naredil serijo uniform in stevilne kose opreme.
Meeting on Pohorje in 2003 was our first public attempt to popularise WW1 re-enactment activity in Slovenia. While colleagues from Prague offered their wholehearted support, little of that was given by local colleagues. In the forthcoming years this, regrettably, became a rule rather than exception.
May 8th and 9th 2004 saw the debut of the renewed group. It's majority was formed by the members of "Zalar's Baon". As they soon devoted themselves to formation of new groups, such as "Patriot" and "Triglav", the next phase was characterised by fluctuating membership. The activity was kept alive mainly thanks to the members of Ros family: Marjan, Silva and Tjasa.

Year 2005 was marked by establishment of contacts with groups "BiH IR No1" from Prague, "IR49" from Vienna and "Isonzo Armee Kommando" from Ljubljana. Despite their work obligations the two founding members, Janze Klun and Bogdan Vitez found some time to join us again for Redipuglia event.

In 2006 other important things happened. We were joined by Korporal iTR Klement Mal and Zugsfuhrer iTR Marko Negrieski with his daughter Tjasa. Branko Pogladic and Bostjan Bacer, members of "Zalar's Baon", became active again as well. The last to strengthened our numbers that year were Veljko Spacapan and Miha Eric. The rebirth of the group was demonstrated on trails to Krn Lake and above Vitovlje. Year 2007 represented a peak of our activity.

In summer of 2007 we organised, with a support by the Ad Pirum Institute and the City of Ljubljana a couple of public parades on Ljubljna's promenade in Tivoli. The first two took place onJuly 1st and 7th, the third one on August 26th and the last one on September 16th. (photo: Rafael Marn). Poleti leta 2007 smo ob podpori zavoda Ad pirum in mesta Ljubljana organizirali vec nastopov na ljubljanski promenadi v Tivoliju. Prva dva sta bila 1. in 7. julija, tretji 26. avgusta in zadnji 16. septembra. (foto: Rafael Marn)
What made us especially proud was the fact that our activity was endorsed by the nameholder of the actual 17th Infantry Regiment, the last Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary, his Highness Archduke Otto von Habsburg, whom we had honour to meet in his home in Vila Austria near Munich on September 15, 2007. For all of us this was an outstanding and very emotional occasion. It could be said that on that day the re-anactment group evolved into a memorial unit.

In October 2007 the administrative duties were taken over by Marko Negrieski, who has been promoted to Fanrich (iTR). He took care that in 2008 the group was officially registered as History Association IR17. On February 20, 2010 in Kerneuburg near Vienna Marko Negrieski faced the panel composed of representatives of different memorial units. He successfully passed a "traditional officer's exam", obtained a rank of Lieutenant iTR and thus also officially took over the command of the "Crownprince Regiment IR17"

POST SCRIPTUM

On Monday, July 4th 2011 we received a sad news that Archduke Otto von Habsburg has passed away. On July 15th we took both with pride and sadness our turns as members of the Guard of Honour by sarcophaguses of the Archduke and his wife, princess Regina in the Kapuzinerkirche in Vienna. The next day we participated at the grand statesman's funeral and bid farewell to our "supreme commander". Thus ended a unique and unrepeatable period when a certain memorial unit was able to be active with an endorsement of the actual nameholder of the original WW1 unit. For us this was an irreplaceable loss.

POST SCRIPTUM
